internet connection required ?

I would like to know if this extension could work without an internet connection (intranet use) or otherwise with a proxy?

We cannot confirm the specifics of your intranet setup, but Google Vector Maps won't function if your intranet is not connected to the internet.
However, it does work with custom vector maps and is fully compatible with a proxy.

Do vector maps of the main countries and continents already exist in the tool or will we have to create them entirely ?

custom map can be used and you can find map created of default country.let us know what country you target.

I will need maps of all countries, but without details (just click on each country to open a link).
Another question about the internet connection: do we need to access Google only during the design of the map, or is there traffic between the server and Google each time a visitor consults the map?

When we load map from google there will be traffic.for your requirement you can explore custom map.
